  Ranges Records newest full length is here and its from none other than the amazingly talented Gradient! 'Protocols' encompasses 10 immense and seasoned tracks that are sure to satisfy your appetite for deep subliminal techno and dub sounds. Gradient, a household name in the genre, has highly regarded releases on a multitude of labels including Greyscale, ZeECc, Entropy, Space Of Variants and U-Cover.
  Ranges is the ideal landing pad for possibly his most notable and daring yet. 'Protocol 1' begins this long player with a hypnotizing foray into a prime example of techno minimalism. Akin to Juan Atkins's 'Starlight', this is master class in well-placed and crafted sounds working together to form an addictive repetition. Creating a harmony to where the listener loses all sense of time as this track pushes to the 10-minute mark. 'Protocol 2' steps up the house elements to where the dancefloor has to be the perfect place for this number. Hypnotic is an understatement as layered percussion drives a subliminal build up that is sure to create a frenzy of anticipation. 'Protocol 3' takes us deeper while not losing the focus that this is a techno album. The beats are pronounced throughout Protocols and the slightest changes accentuate each step along the way. 'Protocol 4' eases off the pressure to create a more translucent and airy production while the catchiness of the sounds around each other stay balanced and consistent. 'Protocol 5' ups the dub feel considerably, marking the middle point of the albums total running time. The chord work being the true differentiator here. Parts 6 & 8 get granular with their signature chord squiggle making you reminisce of classics like Saavas Ysatis where the hooks enslave you. Similarly, 'Protocol 7' rides a more house angle that reels you in happily. Some tracks give off a disorientation of twisted chord work while the beat drives on the importance of keeping things moving and sounding fresh. These tracks stay true to the dub techno formula in every way. Highly addictive and giving a DJ the confidence that these tracks will destroy a heated dancefloor.
